Message from the chair, Board of Directors

Thanks to your patronage, REI is in great financial shape. As a co-op, we are committed to returning profits to our members each year while generously giving back to local communities. With REI's strong performance and the support of members, we are very pleased to declare a full member refund on your eligible purchases.

Your board is committed to serving the interests of our fellow REI members. We continue looking for substantive ways to return more value to our members and the community. In 2007 we added an REI Visa card rebate of 5% on all eligible REI purchases. Also, in direct response to member feedback, beginning January 1, 2008, we changed the dividend policy so that members receive a full credit on their eligible REI purchases, regardless of payment method.

As we celebrate REI's 70th anniversary this year, it is gratifying to know that the co-op continues to positively touch the lives of many people across the country and beyond. The board saw this in action on National Trails Day 2007. We joined REI employees and local residents to clean up coastal areas along the U.S.-Mexico border near Southern California. The service project inspired a sense of community among the 200-plus volunteers on both sides of the border. In the same way, REI has connected me to others who are passionate about the outdoors. That's one reason why I am proud to be a member of this exceptional organization.

I have been honored to represent you on the board these past 12 years and plan to retire on March 31, 2008. I am confident that the new REI board chair will serve our co-op well. And I am equally confident that REI will continue to serve you with excellent products as well as with leadership in conservation and education about outdoor recreation. Looking ahead, I am as committed as ever to enjoying the outdoors and, of course, being an active REI member and volunteer.
