Queen Charlotte Islands

This trip is not available at this time. Be sure to check out our other trips. 11/12/2008

The remote Queen Charlotte Islands provide an unparalleled natural history experience— amazing wildlife, old-growth rainforests, hot springs and ancient native Haida villages. Located 60 miles off the coast on the edge of the Continental Shelf, these isolated islands have developed unique plants and animals and earned the name "the Canadian Galapagos." The rich waters support a wonderful variety of whales and thousands of seabirds. Original totem poles still standing here are protected within the Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve. The ancient and now abandoned Haida village site of Ninstints was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981 in recognition of its cultural value and importance to the history of mankind. The Queen Charlotte Islands, or Haida Gwaii, constitute one of the richest biological and cultural areas in North America. This remote archipelago provides unparalleled wilderness cruising and exploring aboard our 68-foot sailing vessel.

Sample 8 day ITINERARY
Important Notice: Day 1 is the day you should plan to arrive at the meeting point for the trip. This may require departing your hometown one or more days in advance.

2008 Itinerary:

  • Day 1

Your trip will begin this morning. After a group meeting at the local airport, you will board a bus for a short one hour bus ride to Moresby Camp where you will board your home away from home for the next week. Upon boarding the boat, there will be introductions of the crew, a safety orientation, and cabin assignments before venturing into the Gwaii Haanas/South Moresby Wilderness. Lunch and Dinner included.

  • Day 2-7

We will spend our time exploring the eastern and southern shores of Moresby Island. Daily activities include wildlife watching, shore excursions to explore beautiful forested creeks, ancient Haida villages and perhaps exploring the shoreline by kayak. We visit SGaang Gwaii (the village of Ninstints) which has been designated as a United Nations World Heritage Site by UNESCO. We stop at Hotspring Island for a warm, soothing, relaxing dip.  Each evening we will anchor in a different secluded spot in time for slide shows and discussions on the wildlife sightings encountered during the day. The daily itinerary is flexible to meet group interests, weather patterns and to take full advantage of wildlife sightings. All meals included.

  • Day 8

The cruise typically will end in the early morning on the last day. Guests will disembark around 8:00 a.m. at Moresby Camp and be transferred by charter bus to Sandspit airport. The trip by bus takes one hour. You can expect to be in Sandspit in time to take the morning departing flight to Vancouver. If you are not flying to Vancouver you can make easy connections to ferries or rent a car and continue your travels in the Queen Charlotte Islands. Breakfast included.

Note on Itinerary:

Weather can cause delays and/or changes to the itinerary. The crew uses their extensive hands-on experience to adjust the itinerary according to the conditions. We try to organize and pace this trip to satisfy all guests.

Price Includes:

All meals from lunch on the first day to breakfast on the last day; all accommodation onboard ship; skipper, cook, naturalist; use of all on-board facilities.

Not Included:

Transportation to the start point and from the finish point of the trip; any accommodation or meals prior to the start of the trip or after the completion; travel or cancellation insurance; airport transfers; items of a personal nature; gratuities for the crew.

Single Travelers:

On most sailings, we are not able to offer a private cabin to one person and do not have a single supplement policy. If you are a single traveler we will try to find a roommate for you and will do our best to accommodate any special requests.

Entry and Exit Requirements:

U.S. citizens boarding flights to and from Canada are now required to present a passport as proof of U.S. citizenship. Driver's licenses, certified birth certificates, voter registration cards, affidavits and similar documents are no longer sufficient to prove citizenship for readmission into the United States. However, U.S. citizenship documents such as a certified copy (not a simple photocopy) of a U.S. birth certificate, a Naturalization Certificate, a Consular Report of Birth Abroad, or a Certificate of Citizenship are acceptable for those driving to Canada through December 31, 2007. As of January 1, 2008, a passport will be required of all travelers to Canada whether traveling by air, land, or sea. Your passport must be valid for 6 months beyond completion of the trip.  For more information you may wish to visit the U.S. Department of State, Canada Consular Information website: http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_1082.html

Sailboats and cabin configurations:

The Island Roamer and Island Odyssey are custom 68-foot ketches. The boats’ design, safety and comfort make them perfect for these trips. They feature 8 private cabins (double occupancy), 3 bathrooms with hot showers, a large comfortable lounge with an extensive library, and a well-equipped galley. On deck, the large covered seating area provides protection in all types of weather. The vessels are large enough for comfort, privacy and safety, and small enough to create a good rapport among passengers and crew.

Meals:

You can expect excellent meals throughout the trip. Consistently, group members are awed by the scrumptious northwest creations our crew serve up.  Dinners consist of well-balanced cooked meals, with fresh northwest seafood, salads and homemade deserts. Breakfasts are hearty and geared to give you plenty of energy for the day, while lunches generally are sandwiches, cold cuts, salads, bread and cheese. Vegetarian diets are accommodated; we make a special effort to ensure there are non-meat alternatives at every meal.

Qualifications:

This trip is rated Easy Active [2]. This trip will be enjoyed by anyone who is in good health and leads an active life. Daily excursions from the boat to the shore and guests will hike from the landing point to specific areas for wildlife and natural history observation. Hiking time for most landings will be a couple of hours roundtrip with lots of time to stop to study, photograph and enjoy the flora and fauna.

Weather:

Although the summer months are the driest, weather conditions can vary widely and are difficult to predict. The weather can range from lots of sun and temperatures in the low 80s, to rain and nighttime temperatures in the 40s.

Queen Charlotte Islands

The key to staying comfortable while on an active trip is layering. To get maximum comfort with minimum weight, you need versatile layers that mix and match to create the right amount of insulation, ventilation and weather protection. A layered technique is extremely useful here due to varied marine conditions.

Weather

Weather on the west coast of British Columbia is variable and often changes quickly. Summer daytime temperatures generally range between 60-75° F; evenings are cooler. The water temperature remains close to 48° F year-round. Extended periods of rain are unusual, but possible, and mornings may be foggy. While guests should come well prepared for rain and gusty winds, the islands generally have lots of sunshine.

Things to Consider

  • Please remember to always pack essential items such as appropriate identification, money, eyewear and medications in your carry-on baggage, in the event your luggage is delayed. Also pack your camera and all film in the carry-on luggage. Your medication should be clearly labeled.
  • If you wear prescription glasses, use a safety cord and bring an extra pair if possible. Contact lens users should also bring an extra set, or bring eyeglasses for a backup.
  • Cotton is wonderful in warm weather. However, once it becomes wet, it will drain your body heat. Bring wools or synthetics such as Capilene, MTS and Thermax.
  • Good raingear is essential on this trip! Your raingear should be able to repel a full day of rain without leaking. It should have taped seams and preferably an attached hood.
  • Rubber boots should be comfortable. Knee high boots will ensure dry feet. Expect daily use stepping ashore from small boats at the ocean’s edge and walking in west coast rainforest.
  • Storage is limited! The cabins on board are small and storage space is limited. Also, please be aware that there may be weight restrictions for floatplanes.
